Winery Visit - Valhalla Vineyards

Entrance to the Vineyards
This past weekend I visited Valhalla Vineyards with four of my friends from the class. Valhalla is a small family owned vineyard in Roanoke, VA. I grew up ten minutes from Valhalla, but had never seen it before, so I was very excited to finally go. The vineyard is situated on a little mountain with the last few minutes of the drive there involving very windy little roads through orchards. Our first stop was the tasting room, called the "Cellar Door," which was built in 2003. The tasting room was very pretty, with nice views from the patio. There were a lot of people sitting on the patio eating food they brought, drinking the wine, and enjoying the views. The tasting room was fairly busy when we got there so we relaxed outside for a bit while we waited for our chance to taste. We went inside just in time for the clouds to descend on the mountain and for it to start raining. They had several different wines available for tasting, you could choose any five for $6 or eight for $10. I chose to do the five all white tasting. Below are the details on the wines that I tasted. All the wines are from grapes that they grew themselves. They sell their grapes, but they do not buy from other vineyards.

Tasting Room
View from Patio
1st wine:
Name: "Row Ten"
Variety: Chardonnay Viognier blend
Year: 2008
Price: $15

Valhalla's notes: Experimentation led us to this blend. Called the "best of both worlds" our classic Chardonnay and Viognier grapes are fermented then blended to produce a wine exploding with floral aromatics, with a clean crisp finish.

My Review: This wine had an aroma of green vegetables and grass.  It was sweet at first taste with a citrus and tangerine mid palate and a vegetable finish.  It was crisp and light.  This was my favorite wine of all five.

2nd wine:
2008 Viognier
Price: $16

Valhalla's notes: Asuperior white wine with aromas of apricot and citrus. Stainless steel fermented since the 2004 vintage, Full Oak fermentation in 2002. Made in the French style of unfiltered wines, try with chicken, veal or pork.

My Review: This wine smelled very tropical, like pineapples, but with a slight rotten fruit aroma mixed in. After smelling it a couple times I began to detect the alcohol which made it smell a little bit like nail polish remover.  The taste was very tangy, with a really strong flavor of lemons. It seemed well balanced but it lacked any special flavors.  It just sort of seemed generic, to me.

3rd wine:
Name: "Rheingold"
Variety: Reserve Chardonnay (Burgundian Style)
Year: 2005
Price: $24

Valhalla's notes: Our finest. In the sytle of French white Burgundy, full bodied with butteriness, flint and mineral in the mouth. Not made every year --- only in the best years!

My Review: This wine smelled very earthy.  It had a strong aroma of vegetables and dirt.  I could also detect some gasoline on the nose.  It tasted like green peppers, not the hot kind, and other green vegetables.  Overall, it was rather bitter.

4th wine:
2008 Rose
Price: $11

My Review: This wine had a very interested smell of rose water mixed with sea water.  It made me think of someone wearing rose water on a beach or at a fish market. It was very different from any other rose I've smelled before.  The taste was bitter and peppery, but also had flavors of dried vegetables.  It was very acidic, adding a lot of lemon flavor.

5th wine:
Name: "Late Harvest Viognier"
Variety: Viognier
Year: 2009
Price: $20

Valhalla's notes: Just sweet enough to love on its own.

My Review: This wine smelled like apples, peaches and honey suckle. The taste was really, really sweet, like honey. It was even honey colored and had a thicker consistency than wine normally does (not as thick as honey of course). It had an incredibly big flavor and a very, very slight bite. It would be hard to drink very much of this wine at once.  But it was a very good dessert wine.

After tasting we went on a tour of the winery. Our tour guide gave us a lot of information about the vineyard and their wine-making process. As we were walking from the tasting room to the winery building our guide told us that  the land was purchased in 1992 by James and Deborah Vascik.  It was originally apple and peach orchards and it took two years to prepare for the vineyard, which was established in 1994. Their first vintage was in 1998. The vineyard is 2,000 ft in elevation, and is very similar to Sonoma Valley in terroir.  Red wine grapes grow particularly well  in the vineyard due to the decomposing granite in the soil.  This was the reason James and Debra picked this location. They wanted to bring good red wines to Virginia. There were about 55 wineries in Virginia when they built the winery and now there are around 120, but red wine is still under represented.
They harvest in the end of September and the beginning of October.  They can wait a little longer than most vineyards because the temperature on the mountain is often higher than average.  All the harvesting is done by hand by workers that live on the property and care for the vines year round.  During harvest they pick the grapes and sort them into bins then slide them down a wooden slide onto the roof of the winery building.  Then the grapes are poured into holes in the roof of the winery.  These holes lead to de-stemmers inside the building.  The grapes are then transferred into bins and stored five to eight days for reds and less for the whites.  Then the grapes are all mashed by hand, to reduce the number of seeds that are crushed in the mashing process. They believe that the oils released by the seeds in the mashing process causes the "red wine headache." After mashing the grapes go into oak to ferment.  They use natural fermentation in the French style in barrels that are 60 gallons each.

De-stemmers
In 2001 they built a cave for storing the barrels.  It took six months to build.  The cave remains 55 degrees naturally year round with 80% humidity.  It smelled very strongly of vinegar as soon as we walked in from all of the spilled wine on the floor.  The barrels are stacked in two rows along the sides of the cave and are rotated every so often.  The barrels are made of both American and French oak and are kept for 36 months before using.  They toast all their barrels there at the winery.  There were some kegs in the cave as well that are used to top off the barrels.
Barrel Cave
They used to have a company come in to bottle their wine, but became inconvenient since its difficult to know exactly when the wine will be ready to be bottled. So eventually they purchased their own bottling machine.  All the bottles come from France and they use cork because the owners are traditinalists. The wine making is mostly run by Debra Vasicik, who studied wine making in France. The winery can produce around 25,000 bottles a year and it is designed to be small enough for two people to run it. The bottles are stored in an artificially temperature controlled warehouse. They make 13 different varietals.
Viognier Vines
In the first few years of production, Valhalla only sold to small local wine shops. Then the laws for wine distribution in Virginia changed and they had to higher a distributor, since they could no longer distribute their own wine legally. Now their wines are sold in Kroger and other major food stores as well as the small wine stores, like Vintage Cellar.
When they were constructing the winery they uncovered a Buddha statue.  A friend of the owners told them that it would be bad luck to throw it away so they kept it and display it on a wall near the winery building and the bottle warehouse.

Overall, the trip to Valhalla, the tasting, and the tour was a very fun experience.

Tasting - Lopez Panach Tempranillo

Name: Lopez Panach Tempranillo
Variety: Tempranillo
Region: Castilla
Country: Spain
Year: 2009
Price: $3.95

Critic Review: This wine boasts a beautiful red ruby color with a purple hue; brighter than its previous vintages. This wines is fresh and bright with nuances of dark fruits like blackberries, black currants & raspberries. Inviting aromas of spices, wild flowers & violets. Fresh in the mouth with good structure, well balanced acidity & a medium finish. Lopez Panach wines represent amazing value with bright characteristics; and the 2009 Tempranillo is certainly true to that!

My Review: This wine had a very pretty cherry color.  I found the aroma to be a little unpleasant with scents of rotten fruit and mildew.  It was really bitter, with a long lasting smoky finish.  I didn't try this wine with food.

Tasting - Accuro Torrontes

Name: Accuro Torrontes
Variety: Torrontes
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price: $4.95

Critic Review: "Light gold, tropical notes of mango, pineapple, mineral, mouth-filling, lively acidity, stylish." - 90 Points Jay Miller - The Wine Advocate

My Review: This wine smelled of peaches and pears initially. When smelling a second time the alcohol began to mix with the fruit and gave it the aroma of scented nail polish remover.  It was slightly hot at first when tasting but then it mellowed out with the taste of grapefruit and finished with lime.  I did not try this wine with food.

Tasting - Morada Sangria

Name: Morada Sangria
Variety: Sangria
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: Non Vintage
Price: $4.95 for 1 Liter

Critic Review: A traditional Spanish drink made with red wine and citrus extracts. Garnet color and fresh on the palate. Serve well chilled, on its own or with lemonade and slices of fruit like peach, banana or apple.

My Review: This sangria smelled very strongly of oranges.  It had a very pleasant, very sweet taste of oranges and cherries.  It was almost a little too sweet, like orange candy.  I think it would have been better if it was chilled.  I did not try it with food.

Tasting - Cortenova Primitivo

Name: Oak Vineyards Chardonnay
Variety: Chardonnay

Country: U.S.

Critic Review: This light straw-colored Oak Vineyards 2010 Chardonnay expresses smokey aromatics with nuances of apple and lemon zest that continue onto the palate where they flourish into citrus, orange blossom, and smoked oak flavors until meeting a crisp, medium finish.

My review: This wine had an earthy aroma, with a hint of peaches, like a peach rolled in dirt.  At first taste, there wasn't too much flavor to it, but the finish was very very peachy.  It seemed a little out of balance, slightly too acidic and a little hot.  I did not try this wine with food.

Tasting - Poysdorfer Saurussel Gruner Veltliner

Critic Review: Crisp lime flavors, white pepper and lentils, followed by a mouthful of mineral notes and gooseberry. A long lingering finish. A great accompaniment to any Asian or fresh seafood dishes.

My Review: This wine smelled strongly of lemons with a little bit of grass and rocks thrown in.   The taste was pleasant, with slight grapefruit flavors and not overpowered by acidity.  It had a really long lasting aftertaste.  I did not try this wine with food.

Wine Dinner - at home

This past weekend four of my friends and I decided to have our own homemade wine dinner.  We picked out a menu and then went to the vintage cellar and asked for help pairing wines with the food. We prepared all the food and invited eight of our friends to eat and drink with us. We even taught our friends some of the things we've been learning about wine in class.

Menu:
1st Course: Bree, gouda, cheddar, colby-jack and crackers with Chateau de Roquefort Cotes de Provence Corail Rose
2nd Course: Bruschetta with gPG Garganega Pinot Grigio
3rd Course: Pasta Primavera with Monte Antico Toscana red blend
4th Course: Apple crisp and ice cream with Eudald Massana Noya Familia Brut Cava

Wine Details:

Chateau de Roquefort Cotes de Provence Corail Rose:
Variety: Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan, Vermentino, and Clairette
Region: Provence
Country: France
Year: 2010
Price: $7.95

gPg Garganega Pinot Grigio:
Variety: Garganega and Pinot Grigio
Region: Venezie
Country: Italy
Year: 2010
Price: $8.95
Bottle notes: gPG is from the delle Venezie regions of north-eastern Italy. A clean crisp palate with plenty of texture and weight follows aromas of apples and zesty lemons.  It's perfect with grilled white fish or a light risotto.

Monte Antico Toscana:
Variety: 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot
Region: Tuscany
Country: Italy
Year: 2007
Price: $13.95
Bottle notes:  This blend is a result of the synergy between Italian wine specialist Neil Empson and renowned winemaker Franco Bernabei. From the finest grapes and prime Tuscan hillsides, fruit and soil selection allow the wine to achieve consistent quality with each vintage. aged 1 year in oak and 6 months in bottle, its full body and lush, fruity flavor make this a perfect match for cheese, pasta and all meat dishes.

Eudald Massana Noya Familia Brut Cava:
Variety: 58% Macabeu, 19% Parellada, 23% Xarel·lo
Region: Cava
Country: Spain
Year: Non Vintage
Price: $14.95

My thoughts on the pairings:

The Cotes de Provence Rose smelled slightly floral and had strong citrus flavors.  I thought it paired well with the bree and the gouda but not very well with the cheddar or colby-jack.  The wine wasn't extremely sharp or bold but drinking the wine with the cheese definitely too the slightly sharp edge off the wine and mellowed it out.

The Garaganega Pinot Grigio with the bruschetta was my favorite pairing of the night.  The wine had a tangy aroma and flavor but was a little hot and bitter alone.  With the bruschetta the wine became much more mellow and easy to drink and the acidity paired really well with the garlic and tomato of the bruscheta.  together with the bruchetta the wine was crisp and summery tasting.

The Monte Antico Toscana had the aroma of dark cherries and prunes and a lot of oak flavor.  It had a fairly thin body which was good for pairing with the light pasta dish, which was spring veggies cooked in stock and paired with wheat pasta.

The Eudald Massana Noya Brut with the apple crisp was my least favorite pairing.  This sparkling wine was citrusy and tangy but overall pretty dry, which didn't pair well with the sweet apple crisp.  Drinking the wine alone after eating the crisp was a nice finish to the meal but it wasn't good for drinking while eating the crisp.

With our dinner we were able to learn a little about food and wine pairings and to try four very different wines, and compare our thoughts with each other.  Overall, the dinner was a very enjoyable night of wine, food, and conversation.

Name: Peter Mertes Liebfraumilch Rheinhessen Qualitatswein
Variety: White Blend
Region: Rheinhessen
Country: Germany
Year: 2009

Critic Review: Leibfraumilch is a soft, delicate wine of the Rheinhessen and Palatinate districts. The original wine was named after the Leibfraumilch monastery in Worms, where the monks were the first wine growers and produced an unusually pleasing wine. Wines of the Rheinhessen and Palatinate are noted for their aroma, well balanced harmony, and fragrance. Leibfraumilch, as all excellent white wines is best served chilled. We suggest serving with cold entrees, as well as poultry, such as chicken or turkey, or even with a mild Cheddar, mellow and slightly nutty with a medium consistency.

Critic Review: 87 Points, Robert Parker
The 2007 Ebano 6 is 100% Tempranillo aged 4 months in French oak. Dark ruby red in color, it displays a pleasant bouquet of cedar, spice box, violets, black cherry, and blackberry. Medium- to fullbodied on the palate with savory flavors and plenty of spice, this racy, vibrant Tempranillo has enough structure to drink well over the next 5-6 years and is a very good value.

My Review:  This wine had the aroma of raspberries and cranberries.  It had strong spicy taste, with a hint of oak and was a little hot.  It had a strong tannic component as well.  I did not try this wine with food.

Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2009
Price: $4.95

Critic Review: 85 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Apple and floral notes and then an almost buttery palate with baked apple and citrus flavors.

Tasting - Muscanti Brut

Name: Muscanti Brut
Variety:Whine Sparkling Blend
Region: Girona
Country: Spain
Year: None Given
Price: $7.95

Critic Review: Lemon blossoms, green apple, toast and honeydew melon are front and center in this crisp refreshing Spanish Sparkler. Silky supple with lingering flavors, yet a tingle of citric acid on the finish.  A combination of traditional cava grapes but this wine is not made in the traditional méthode champenoise (which is required by Spanish law to be called Cava). This is made with the Charmat
process so this wine may only be called ‘Spanish sparkling wine’ .

My Review: This wine was very light golden in color.  It smelled like kiwis.  It was dry and not very acidic.  It tasted like pears with a slightly bready or yeasty aftertaste. The carbonation was very light.  I did not try this wine with food.

Variety: Riesling
Region: Pfalz
Country: Germany
Year: 2010

Critic Review: Flint and mineral notes accent pineapple and lime aromas, while on the palate, the wine shows plenty of ripe, citrusy fruit flavors. Tangy acids on the long finish provide balance.

My Review: This wine smelled very much like minerals and wet rocks.  It was very acidic, very tangy and had a strong citrus flavor with some hints of pineapple.  It had an overall sweet flavor, despite the acidity.  The stark contract between the taste and the smell was interesting.  It liked the taste, but I didn't care for the smell at all.  I did not try this wine with food.

Tasting - Don Ramon Tinto

Variety: 75% Grenache, 25% Tempranillo

on a medium framework. A subtle earthiness underneath the bright
fruit adds some depth and complexity.

Region: Yecla
Country: Spain

Critic Review: Bodegas Castano's 2009 Monastrell was aged for 6 months in neutral French oak. Produced entirely from estate fruit and now bottled in screw-cap for the USA market, it is a dark ruby-colored wine with a fragrant nose of underbrush, blueberry, and plum. Super-juicy on the palate and densely packed, this is a pleasure-bent effort for drinking over the next 2-3 years. " 88 - points The Wine Advocate.

My Review: This wine smelled like dried cherries, currants and a little bit like cranberries.  It was very dark in color.  The taste was yeasty and little like cherries with a bitter slightly oak-flavored aftertaste. It was full bodied with a blast of flavor initially. I did not try this wine with food.

Price: $7.95

Critic Review: Spicy, jammy, ripe round plum with juicy soft finish. Goes well with marsala chicken, peppered steak or broiled lamb shank.

My Review: I haven't tried very many types of red wines before but this zinfandel is the first one that I've tried that I actually liked.  It was the color of cherry juice and smelled of strawberry jam initially.  It was creamy and soft to taste.  After the first taste the aroma changed to a creamier smell, almost like strawberry jam mixed with butter.  It had an oak finish.  I didn't taste this wine with food.

Tasting - Tres Ojos Garnacha Tempranillo Rose

Name: Tres Ojos Garnacha Tempranillo Rose
Variety: Blend  of Tempranillo and Garacha
Region: Calatayud
Country: Spain
Year: 2010
Price: $5.95

Critic Review: A 50-50 blend of Tempranillo and Garacha, this medium rose-colored rosado boasts a spicy red cherry/plum nose with a soft lush attack of red berry fruit flavors and a crisp dry finish. Simple and refreshing and a natural for tapas.

My Review:  This wine did not smell very good to me. It had an unpleasant spicy aroma.  It was also a little too dry for my taste.  However, it did have a nice cherry mid palate.  The finish tasted of raspberries mixed with straw. I didn't taste this wine with food.

Tasting - Legaris Crianza

Name: Legaris Crianza
Variety: Tempranillo
Region: Ribera del Duero
Country: Spain
Year: 2003
Price: $8.95

Critic Review: 90 Points, Wine Spectator.  A silky texture carries plum, tobacco, coffee and mineral flavors over ripe tannins in this balanced red. Berry and vanilla notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2013. –T.M.

My Review: Legaris Crianza had a dark fruity smell, resembling cherry.  It might have been a little off balance, I could definitely detect the alcohol coming through when tasting it.  I couldn't really pick out any distinct flavors though, it tasted like any other typical red wine. I didn't taste this wine with food.

Tasting - Lazzaro Chardonnay

Name: Lazzaro Chardonnay
Variety: Chardonnay
Region: Mendoza
Country: Argentina
Year: 2010
Price: $6.95

Critic Review: Opens with mellow peach and melon aromas and some oak.  The palate is round, creamy, and full.  Tastes of spiced, dried apple with a stalky, pithy accent.

My Review: I don't drink wine very often but this is one of the few white wines I've tried for which I actually liked the aroma.  It smelled of very sweet melon.  It has a creamy consistency when tasting with a slightly bitter aftertaste. I didn't taste this wine with food.

Tasting - Coastal Vines Brut

Name: Coastal Vines Brut
Variety: Sparkling French Colombard, Chardonnay, Mixed Whites blend
Region: California
Country: US
Year: Not given
Price: $6.95

Critic Review: Coastal Vines Sparkling Wine is a light colored wine with aromas of apple and citrus.  On the palate there are flavors of melon and pear.  The finish is crisp and clean. Pair with cheeses, like brie, for appetizers; grilled garlic shrimp over a bed of pasta; or with a light white cake for dessert.

My Review:  This sparkling wine had a nice apple smell.  It was heavily carbonated, a little too much for my taste.  I couldn't pick out any distinct flavors tasting it, it was hard to get past all of the carbonation.  It was slightly sweet to the taste.  I think perhaps it would have been better if I had tried it with food.
